Focus groups are in-depth group interviews of about a dozen people. An experienced RLW moderator can utilize the principles of group dynamics to obtain attitudes and perceptions which might not be revealed through direct questions as in a personal interview or survey. Questions generally allow more open-ended response than personal interviews, allowing individuals to communicate issues they feel are most important. Focus groups can be conducted with participants, non-participants, utility staff, and contractor personnel for the program. Depending on the objectives of the evaluation, they can include a mix of these groups or be limited to one type of group.
